The City of Richmond has received national recognition for its engineer-in-training program from the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators.

The city was presented with the association’s 2020 professional development award, in the 100,000-plus population category, during a virtual ceremony today.

“The Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) is pleased to recognize Richmond for its program for new engineers,” said Jake Rudolph, CAMA president and chief administrative officer for the City of Nanaimo. “The program develops well-rounded and adaptable professionals, resulting in far-reaching benefits to both participants and the city.”

The engineer-in-training program is offered for those new to the profession. Over their training period, engineers are exposed to a variety of teams, projects, and objectives as they rotate annually through the City of Richmond’s engineering and transportation departments. This highly-focused program is designed by experienced city professionals and results in participating engineers becoming well-rounded, versatile, and effective in the municipal setting while preparing for their professional designation.

In 2017, the City of Richmond became the first municipality to gain accreditation with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC) for its accredited employer member-in-training program. Engineers-in-training with the city now have even greater access to education, developmental resources and mentorship opportunities.

Membership in the EGBC program also helps the city attract and retain high-calibre talent, and streamlines the processing and evaluation of applicants seeking their professional designation. Furthermore, the city benefits from the new perspectives and approaches the engineers-in-training bring to the team.
