It may not get you on the walls
on the Louvre or even the Richmond Art Gallery, but it will guarantee you an
audience and everlasting fame in the City of Richmond.
The City of Richmond is inviting
artists of all ages and abilities to show their talents and submit entries to
the annual Street Banner Contest. The contest, now in its 27th year, is looking
for creative, visually-appealing art that celebrates Richmond’s diversity,
landscapes, activities and unique experiences.
Submissions, which can encompass
a range of artistic mediums including photography, graphic design, painting,
print making and collage, must reflect one of the following Richmond themes:
• Connection
• Island City
• The Arts
• Culture
• City Centre
• Heritage
• Community
• Active Living
• Sustainability
• Nature
One design will be chosen that
represents each theme, with the 10 winners having their creative genius turned
into approximately 100 street banners each that will be installed throughout
Richmond’s downtown core, on walking paths and on main gateways leading in and
out of the city. The banners will be displayed for one year beginning in
February 2020.
A community volunteer judging
panel will initially select up to 20 designs as semi-finalists, with the final
judging taken to a public vote. All semi-finalist designs will be posted on the
City of Richmond’s Facebook page and City’s webpage where the community will be
invited to pick their favourite designs. This year, and for the first time, all
contest entries will be displayed at the Minoru Centre for Active Living for
viewing until mid-November.
Contest winners will receive a
$300 honorarium along with a full-sized banner featuring their winning
submission. More importantly, they will be able to direct their friends,
families, colleagues and visitors to look skyward, point to their award-winning
banner and say proudly “That was me!”
Submissions will be accepted
until 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18.

guidelines, visit www.richmond.ca/banners.
Richmond’s Street Banner Contest
is part of the broader Partners for Beautification Program, which invites
community members to become actively involved in the beautification of their
city.
