McMath secures berth in B.C.’s
As the old adage goes, win and you’re in.
The McMath Wildcats did, posting an 85-79
victory over Vancouver’s Charles Tupper Tigers Wednesday night in the Lower
Mainland playdowns, to advance to the B.C. High School AAA Senior Boys’
Basketball Championships next month at the Langley Events Centre.
“We’re off the show. I’m so happy for the
kids,” said McMath co-coach Tony Wong-Hen.
The Wildcats, though, still have some
unfinished business at the Mainlands, scheduled to face No.1-ranked Byrne Creek
Bulldogs for the regional title Friday at 6:15 p.m. at the Richmond Olympic
Oval. Byrne Creek topped Richmond Colts 90-69 in Wednesday’s other semifinal.
Tonight (Thursday) will feature a pair of
other Richmond teams trying to nail down berths to the provincials. The Colts
will face St. Thomas More Knights at 2:45 p.m., while Steveston-London Sharks
will tangle with Tupper at 6:15 p.m. The two winners will grab the final two of
four qualifying spots from the Lower Mainland zone.
Two weeks ago, McMath earned the Richmond
championship as Jordin Kojima scored 41 points to power the Wildcats past the
McNair Marlins 103-79. It was McMath’s first Richmond title since 2005.
Kojima had a game-high 28 points, and Bryce
Mason 16, in the Wildcats’ victory over Tupper.
