Red Bulls enjoy auspicious metro debut
The level of excitement is unmistakable as
the Richmond Red Bulls embark on their inaugural season of metro soccer.
But even before playing their first official
league match (scheduled for this weekend on the North Shore), the under-13
girls have reached the top. The under-13 girls’ team won all four of its
matches in the SX International Cup tournament last weekend in Surrey. The
prize was a first-ever trophy, on which all the players will have their names
engraved.
“Needless to say they were all very excited,
as were the parents,” said coach Kyle Shury, who is also the proud dad of
player Bella Shury.
The Red Bulls kicked off the tournament
Saturday with a 1-0 victory over a team from Kelowna, and then began a busy
Sunday with a 2-1 win over the North Shore Renegades followed by a 2-0 win over
Surrey United. That set the stage for a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Coquitlam
Metro Ford in their third and final game of the day.
“It was a good opportunity for us to warm up
for the (official) season,” said Kyle Shury, describing the step up to metro as
a big one.
Well-known in adult soccer circles for his
success with the Richmond All Blacks, Shury will also bring a well-tested
playing strategy to the Red Bulls.
“We’ve talked to the girls from the get-go
about how to build (offence) from the backline and the need to support one
another,” he said.
The style of play has already generated many
accolades from other coaches, who’ve commented on the “beautiful brand of
soccer” the girls play.
