Hugh McRoberts Strikers mined silver at the provincial high school senior girls’ rugby XV championships Saturday in Abbotsford.

Seeded third in the double-A league going into the tournament, the Strikers gave a much bigger Elgin Park team from Surrey all it could handle, even leading by two points late, before the Orcas scored a pair of tries with less than 10 minutes on the clock and added a third in time running down in the deciding match to post a 24-17 victory.

Guided by head coach Graham Haigh and alumni associate coaches Thalia Puac, Jaya Gill, Elizabeth Shin the Strikers fought hard and played very physical games to win a spot in the final. Then, from the opening whistle against the Orcas, the Strikers showed they keep pace with their hard-hitting and fast-running foes. The result by the Strikers, who fought gallantly to the end, is the best by a McRoberts senior girls’ rugby team since 2008.
