Richmond’s Jody Cranston won a double first place at the AAU 2023 27th Annual Ali Beach Classic: Feats of Strength and Powerlifting Championships on the weekend.

Cranston competed in the Masters 220 lbs division in the Deadlift for Reps and the Heavy Stone Carry events at the competition.

The Richmond athlete deadlifted 275 lbs 21 times in 30 seconds to win his first event and carried a 110 lbs stone 50 yards in 13 seconds to win his second event on Saturday. Both results were meet records. “In the feats of strength events, speed is just as important as power,” Cranston said. “You have to train hard for both.”

Cranston has previously held a provincial deadlift record in powerlifting and has competed in strength sports for over 30 years, starting in 1994. His all time best deadlift is 590 lbs at 163 lbs body weight.

At 50 years plus Cranston says a major motivation to always keep training hard is to keep up with his 16-year-old daughter Taila who plays high level rep softball with the Richmond Islanders.

His two wins on the weekend qualify him for the AAU World Championships this fall in Las Vegas.
