McMath Wildcats showed a penchant for shooting from beyond the arc Wednesday. It proved to be fruitful.

Hitting 12 of their 15 three-pointers in the opening half, the Wildcats soared to a 91-58 victory and a berth in the main draw at the 2019 Boys Tsumura Basketball Invitational. The annual high school tournament, recognizing one of B.C.’s all-time greatest basketball writers in Howard Tsumura, continues through Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

The combination of Travis Hamberger (30 points), Jon Downtown (25 points) and Rio Hutchful (17 points) was virtually unstoppable in netting 72 of McMath’s points.

Another Richmond entry, MacNeill Ravens, also nearly advanced but came up short in a 78-72 overtime loss to Seaquam Seahawks. The latter overcame a late eight-point deficit.

The Swaim boys, Everett and Hudson, paced MacNeill with 22 and 13 points respectively.

Next week, the 2019 Girls Tsumura Basketball Invitational (featuring McMath’s senior girls’ team) takes over the Langley Events Centre through Dec. 14.
