Richmond’s Victor Radocaj is turning heads at Canada Basketball’s under-16 training camp in Toronto.

Named Tuesday (June 6) to the final roster that will represent Canada at the FIBA U16 Americas championship June 14 to 18 in Formosa, Argentina, the six-foot-six Grade 9 McMath student burst on to the national basketball program’s radar in 2016 as a member of B.C.’s under-15 squad.

“He puts in an incredible amount of work both with his basketball and his school work,” said Tony Wonghen, who briefly coached Radocaj when the latter was called up to McMath’s senior boys’ team last season.

Radocaj and his Canadian teammates will train in Toronto through June 9 before heading to Argentina for pre-tournament training. Canada will tip off tournament play versus host Argentina June 14, and will play Paraguay June 15 and Venezuela June 16. Semifinals are set for June 17 and the championship game June 18.

“(We were) pleased with the competitiveness of the tryouts and we’re excited to continue working with these young men as we prepare for the FIBA Americas,” said head coach Craig Beaucamp.

Currently ranked third in the world in the FIBA youth men’s rankings, Canada is looking to qualify for its fifth consecutive under-17 world championship in 2018.
