Richmond RCMP are investigating after an elderly man was robbed by a female who allegedly used distraction techniques to make off with his jewelry.

Police were called to the 10300 block of Hall Avenue shortly before 2 p.m. on Sept. 25 after a woman allegedly took a wrist watch from an unsuspecting man before making off in a nearby vehicle.

The victim said the female suspect exited a vehicle, approached him and asked for the time. She then allegedly handed him a gold coloured necklace and ring, before removing a watch from his wrist, pushing him to the ground, and running back to the vehicle. The vehicle then sped away from the scene, leaving the victim with minor injuries.

The suspect is described as a heavy set South Asian woman wearing a green sweater. The suspect vehicle is described as a powder blue Volkswagen SUV. The driver of the vehicle was described as a South Asian man.

Police believe the suspects may have also been in the neighbourhood earlier in the week, and are asking residents in the area to review home surveillance recordings in hopes they may have captured the suspects or their vehicle on video.

Cpl. Ian Henderson of the Richmond RCMP says distraction-type robberies like this one are becoming more common.

“We want to remind the public to be wary of people who approach you on the street, then place jewelry on you or try to get you to hold something for them,” he says. “They may be trying to focus your attention on something else while they steal your belongings.”

“If someone approaches you in this manner, walk away immediately, get yourself to a safe place and report the incident to police,” Henderson adds.

Anyone who may have information on this matter is asked to call Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212. Should you wish to remain anonymous, please call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
