BC’s COVID-19 case count has reached record-breaking highs this week, and as of today there are 824 active cases in the province.
Provincial health authorities also announced 90 new cases of the virus today for a total of 4,915 in BC. In addition, 2,594 people are under active public health monitoring as a result of identified exposure to known cases.
Thirteen people are hospitalized with COVID-19, five of whom are in intensive care. There were two new COVID-19 related deaths, both in the Fraser Health region, for a total of 202 in the province.
There were no new healthcare facility outbreaks, with active outbreaks continuing at eight longterm care or assisted-living facilities and one acute-care facility. There were also no new community outbreaks, although community exposure events continue.
While there are new orders in effect to enforce public health orders during the COVID-19 pandemic, BC health authorities said they are heartened that the vast majority of people in the province are doing their part to protect themselves and each other.
Those who choose to disregard public health orders are the exception, said Health Minister Adrian Dix and deputy provincial health officer Dr. Réka Gustafson. The public health response reduces the spread of the virus by establishing safety plans in settings like businesses and schools, detecting and isolating new cases as quickly as possible and containing the spread when clusters occur.
