Health authorities: take care of mental health during COVID-19

BC health authorities are reminding people to take care of their mental health as COVID-19 remains in our communities.

Anxiety and stress come with the uncertainty, increased isolations and necessary precautions in everyday life.

In particular, younger people may not fully understand why many of the activities they normally enjoy are no longer available, look different and require interacting with each other in new ways. Health authorities recommend taking the time to check in with friends, family and neighbours to provide a mental health boost and offer support, especially for those who may be self-isolating.

Resources such as Kids Help Phone (for youth who may be struggling) or VictimLinkBC (for people experiencing family or intimate partner violence) are available to those in need.

• Kids Help Phone: 1 800 668-6868 and at: Kidshelpphone.ca

• VictimLinkBC: 1 800 563-0808.

Health authorities also announced 47 new cases of COVID-19 today, including one epi-linked case. ‘Epi-linked’ means that public health investigations have shown that cases meet the case definition for COVID-19 but may not have been tested for a number of reasons. The total case count in BC is 3,834.

There were no new deaths related to the virus, and no new healthcare or community outbreaks. But community exposure events continue to occur throughout the province and on incoming and outgoing flights.

Alerts for these exposures continue to be posted on the BC Centre for Disease Control and health authorities' websites, providing details on where the potential exposure occurred and what actions you need to take—whether you need to immediately self-isolate, or monitor for symptoms.
