While the last few days have seen the number of COVID-19 cases in BC decline, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix warn that British Columbians are not out of the woods yet.

“We need to strike the right balance with the easing of restrictions to ensure the go-forward approach is safe, practical and sustainable for the long term,” they said in a statement.

Dix and Henry announced new cases over two reporting periods: May 9 to 10 and May 10 to 11.

In the first reporting period, there were nine new cases. In the second, there were 14. The total number of confirmed cases in BC is now 2,353.

There was one more COVID-19 related death for a total of 130 in the province.

There were no new long-term care or assisted living facility outbreaks. There are still active outbreaks at 15 facilities and five acute-care units.

Health teams continue to provide support for community outbreaks in the poultry sector, at the Mission Institution and with those connected to the Kearl Lake plant in Alberta.

With Phase 2 of restrictions set to begin next week, Dix and Henry reminded British Columbians to remain patient and calm to prevent a new surge in cases.

“We can safely restart our province with everyone working together, supporting each other with patience and care. It is in our hands to make that happen,” they said.
