With people using more household cleaning products during the COVID-19 pandemic, Health Canada is warning Canadians about the risks of poisoning when products are used improperly.

Between February and March, poison centres received 58 per cent more reports of exposure to cleaning products—like bleaches, disinfectants, and hand sanitizers—compared with the same period last year.

Health Canada recommends that people always read and follow the directions on product labels to avoid improper use and risk of poisoning. Keep all cleaning and sanitization products out of reach of children.

Before using products, check that they have been authorized for sale by Health Canada. Authorized products will have an eight-digit Drug Identification Number on their label.

If you or someone else has been in contact with any household products and you think there is a risk of harm, call a poison centre or your health care provider right away. Ensure you have the product label handy to provide information to the person who answers the phone.

For British Columbia’s poison control centre, call 604-682-5050 or 1-800-567-8911.
