Last year's community art piece being worked on for National Indigenous Peoples Day. This year's project will be led by Indigenous artist Christine MacKenzie on Friday, June 21 at the City Centre Community Centre.

National Indigenous Peoples Day June 21
Drop in to City Centre Community Centre on Friday, June 21 to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day with Indigenous artist Christine MacKenzie. Participants of all ages and art abilities are invited between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to the free Art and Bannock event.
Christine Mackenzie will lead everyone in painting a story on canvas and cedar. The art piece will include Pacific Northwest flora and fauna that signify the Indigenous culture while representing the multicultural community of Richmond. Bannock will also be served while this indigenous flat quick bread lasts. The completed art piece will be displayed at City Centre Community Centre, located at 5900 Minoru Boulevard, until Wednesday, July 31.
Leading up to the nationally-recognized day is the Indigenous Plant Walk on Saturday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., led by Terry Point, Cultural Educator from the Musqueam First Nation. Participants will head outdoors and visit a City Centre park and learn about medicinal, edible, traditional and present day usages of local flora. Registration is required for this event atcity's websitewith barcode #2725185. This event is $10.75 per person for those 16+ years. (There is no charge for those 15 years and younger.)
The National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration and Indigenous Plant Walk are hosted by the City Centre Community Association and aims to provide a harmonious gathering space for everyone in Richmond to learn about the origins of the land.
