SPOTLIGHT ON HOME VIEWING & A WINTER COCKTAIL

THE VIEW #1 – RUN AWAY

From the novel by best selling author, Harlan Coben, comes this engrossing, 8 episode mini-series from Britain about a desperate father named Simon Greene trying to find his daughter. Once a promising university student, she is now a drug addict and in a physically abusive relationship. She is also missing. The situation is made worse when the daughter’s boyfriend is brutally murdered. Not content to sit back and let the police lead the search for his daughter – and despite being the leading suspect in the boyfriend’s murder – Greene begins his own investigation. The less said here, the better in terms of what he finds as he digs deeper (not to mention those individuals he comes across). If you’re a fan of Harlan Coben books, Run Away will not disappoint. For us, the cast is as strong as the plot, starting with James Nesbitt as the father. We’ve been fans of his since his late 90’s dramedy, Cold Feet, and powerful films like 2002’s Bloody Sunday. Other standouts include Ruth Jones, Amy Gledhill and Minnie Driver as Greene’s wife, Ingrid. Run Away is streaming now on Netflix. www.netflix.com

THE SIP – COASTAL MIST

He was one of the first cocktail experts we turned to when Spotlight column began back in 2021. Andrew MacDonald is a Certified Spirit Specialist and Bar Manager at Homer Street Café. He has made cocktails as far away as Japan, and also introduced Our City Tonight TV and this column to cocktails made from the popular Japanese brand, CHOYA. With that in mind, we headed to Homer Street Café, keen to sample one of MacDonald’s a warm and cozy cocktail. His choice, the Coastal Mist. “It’s made with Sheringham Seaside Gin,” he says as we take that first sip, “along with Esquimalt Bitter Red aperitif, and a honey liqueur from Wayward Distillery called Krupnik.” It is an exquisite cocktail, perfect for this time of year. “What’s also attractive is that all three of these ingredients are from Vancouver Island,” MacDonald tells us, “with an added bit of Okanagan Cabernet Franc, which acts like the acid; like a holiday festive cocktail garnished with a touch of Anise.” As we continue to enjoy the Coastal Mist, MacDonald goes on to say that part of what makes this cocktail so delicious is its nicely spiced finish. “Ideally, this cocktail is made to enjoy while curled up around the fire place,” he says. If you don’t have a fire place, trust us, you’ll still love the Coastal Mist! www.homerstreetcafebar.com

THE GEM – HIDDEN

Another pick for home viewing also comes from Britain. It’s called Hidden. First released in 2011, this powerful drama centres around a small-time lawyer named Harry Venn. He’s smart, tough, street-wise, but with a past that’s murky at best. His life and career are thrown into turmoil and danger when he is hired by a lawyer named Gina Hawkes. She’s searching for a missing alibi witness for her client. That client is connected to Venn’s past and his brother who died 20 years ago. This is the kind of police/detective drama we like: a story that’s starts small and continues to build and build while also involving more and more powerful people, including in this case, the British government. Another strong cast keeps this maze of a storyline moving, including Philip Glenister as Harry Venn, Theka Reuten as Gina Hawkes, and longtime character actors David Suchet and Anna Chancellor. If you missed this 15 years ago, take our word for it, Hidden is a gem that deserves to be discovered! Streaming now on BritBox Canada. www.britbox.com
