Health Minister Adrian Dix and provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry provided case updates for two 24-hour reporting periods: May 2 to May 3, and May 3 through to midday today.

In the first reporting period through May 3 there were 34 new cases. In the last 24 hours there were a further 19 new cases, for a total of 2,224 confirmed cases in British Columbia.

Three more people have died of reasons related to COVID-19 for a total of 117 in the province.

In the last day, there have been no new long-term care or assisted-living facility outbreaks. In total, 19 facilities and three acute-care units have active outbreaks, with outbreaks now declared over at 14 care facilities.

Public health teams continue to provide support to a number of community outbreaks, including contact tracing.

There are seven confirmed positive cases at Fraser Valley Specialty Poultry, 54 at Superior Poultry in Coquitlam and 35 employees confirmed positive at United Poultry in Vancouver.

There are also 134 inmates and staff confirmed positive at the Mission Institution federal correctional centre, as well as 15 positive cases of COVID-19 connected to the Kearl Lake plant in Alberta.

New modelling released today shows that the curve is flattening, but safe physical distancing must be maintained in order to keep it flat.

Henry and Dix said until there is a vaccine available to all, COVID-19 will exist in BC. The new normal will protect people’s health and well-being, as well as protecting the health care system.
