The aviation industry has been one of the hardest hit by COVID-19, with air travel heavily restricted.
At today’s Richmond COVID-19 Community Task Force meeting, CEO Craig Richmond said Vancouver International Airport (YVR) expects to operate on a smaller scale for several years.
Richmond said he has seen many carriers moving to cargo only, including major airlines like Air Canada, China Southern, and Cathay Pacific. China Southern is flying its largest plane, the Airbus A380.
Much of the cargo arriving is personal protective equipment. Outbound goods currently leaving the West Coast include seafood and cherries.
Of 6,000 passengers who have arrived at YVR over a recent two-week period, only 100 did not have a self-isolation plan—and they were placed in mandatory quarantine.
Arriving passengers are encouraged to submit their self-isolation plans and health information through a new app, available here.
“We are consolidating to weather the crisis,” said Richmond.
