Another Steveston tradition won’t be happening this year.

Close on the heels of cancelling the 50-year-old Steveston Salmon Festival, the Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market has met the same fate as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The board of directors of the Richmond Agricultural and Industrial Society and the Steveston Community Society voted unanimously not to hold the popular event in 2020. The market was set to open May 10.

Alan Sakai, president of the agricultural and industrial society and chair of the Steveston Farmers Market Committee, said it was a difficult decision.

“The decision was not an easy one as this will affect the many vendors, artists, staff and volunteers that make the market successful each year,” he said.

But given the current COVID-19 pandemic, and the protocols required and put in place by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, cancelling the market this year was determined to be the most responsible decision.

This would have been the market’s 12th year. Operated by a volunteer committee, many vendors and community members have come to appreciate the opportunity to meet, sell and purchase locally crafted and grown products.

Looking forward to the market’s return in 2021, the committee is currently exploring ways to support and connect the vendors with the community in other ways. In the meantime, the committee extended its thanks to the vendors and those who have supported the market each year. As well, committee members want everyone to stay safe.
