Enforcement officers can now issue $2,000 violation tickets for price gouging and the reselling of medical supplies and other essential goods during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This order was issued Sunday by Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth. The new measures are part of the province’s Emergency Program Act.
“These orders are not suggestions, they are the law,” said Farnworth. “These measures will provide enforcement officers and police agencies the ability to enforce the law on these criminal acts and despicable practices, like the reselling of medical supplies and price gouging.”
Provincial authorities call upon compliance staff across the province to support this enforcement for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic state of emergency. This includes municipal bylaw officers, liquor and cannabis inspectors, gaming inspectors, conservation officers, community safety unit inspectors, park rangers, natural resource officers, commercial vehicle safety officials and sheriffs.
Police and other enforcement officers can issue $2,000 violation tickets for infractions throughout this state of emergency. If required, they can also actively enforce and ticket those who exceed quantity limits on the sale of specific items, or those who do not comply with requirements for hotel and other lodging operators to provide accommodation for self-isolation facilities or to support essential workers.
