This year marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, although many celebrations might look a little different.

Earth Day, celebrated on April 22 each year, invites people to think about and take action on issues related to climate change, environmental sustainability, and the protection of nature. Digital celebrations around the world are marking the important day this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Earth Day is a powerful reminder that our attitudes and our actions constantly affect our planet,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Now, more than ever, is a great time to celebrate the nature that is in our backyards and outside our front doors. Being in nature is known to reduce stress and promote individual wellbeing, which is important for all of us in these challenging times. However, while exploring their neighbourhoods, residents are encouraged to be responsible in maintaining physical distancing guidelines and avoiding gathering in groups.”

Richmondites are encouraged to celebrate nature in safe and accessible ways by admiring things that live and grow in their backyard, or while on a walk.

By staying close to home and exploring their immediate community, residents can reduce overburdening on parks and trails. Continue to maintain a physical distance of at least two metres and avoid gatherings.

Residents are encouraged to share the nature around them on social media using the hashtags #natureinmyneighbourhood, #Richmondhasheart and #RichmondBC.
