Have you got your summer reading list yet? I just started in on mine and finished reading The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali. This novel follows the lives of two girls in 1950s Tehran through the fall of the Shah to the current Woman, Life, Freedom moment in Iran – it is available online as an e-book, an audiobook, and also a printed book from the Richmond Public Library.
Our fabulous Richmond libraries offer more than just books. This summer check out the Indigenous Author Series which includes author readings, storytelling, and guided nature walks during the month of June. And the Summer Reading Club for Kids will have the official kick-off event with Science World on Sunday, July 6 at the Brighouse Library. The Club promotes literacy and physical literacy through a partnership with City recreation facilities.
Getting your family active is easy with the $29 active pass for kids 5-18, which includes swimming, skating, pitch and putt, fitness centres and select drop-in group fitness classes at City facilities. In addition, Steveston and South Arm outdoor pools are now open! And don’t forget that our pools, community centres and recreation facilities are accessible by active transportation. Check out our walking trails and cycling map at Richmond.ca/trails.
The Steveston Park upgrade is nearly complete and its official opening is Tuesday, June 24 at 9:30am. I played in this park as a child and brought my sons there. We are delighted that the next generations of kids will get to enjoy the upgraded version!
A great way to meet new people and see new places in Richmond is to walk with the Richmond Fitness and Wellness Association. Saturdays at 10am and Thursdays at 7pm, rain or shine, walks take around an hour and cover 4 to 5 km. Some walks are dog friendly – please check the website to be sure.
Specifically for seniors, Richmond offers Out Trips and Tours – bus trips departing from various community centres to fun activities such as the BC Highland Games and Scottish Festival Trip, to Rediscovering Nature at the Richmond Nature Park. Prices start at $2 and registration is required.
Under the annual, national ParticipACTION program, Richmond was awarded BC’s Most Active Community in 2022 and 2024. Help us win the title for all of Canada this year by registering your business or simply taking the pledge online (by June 30) to get active this summer.
