To reduce the likelihood of wildfires caused by humans, most open burning activities will be banned in BC as of April 16.

The following activities will be prohibited from April 16 until further notice:

  • Category 2 open fires
  • Category 3 open fires
  • Resource Management open fires
  • • The use of fireworks;
  • • The use of sky lanterns
  • • The use of burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description (except when used for a campfire)

These prohibitions apply to all public and private land in BC unless specified otherwise. Before lighting any fire, check with local government authorities.

These open burning prohibitions will help protect the health and safety of the public.

They will also reduce demands on firefighting resources, which is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, they will support the BC Centre for Disease Control’s recommendation to help reduce excess air pollution and improve air quality.
