Grade 12 McMath student Taila Cranston won her weight class at the AAU Washington State Powerlifting Championships on the weekend.

The 17-year-old competed in the 104 pound weight class and set an AAU provincial deadlift record by lifting an elite level 220 pounds - over double her body weight. The Richmond resident also bench pressed a national class weight of 85 pounds.

The all day event took place before a sold out and enthusiastic crowd at the Stewart Performance Centre in Seattle, Washington.

Taila trains mainly at the Richmond Oval and South Arm Community Center. She is coached by her father Jody Cranston who has previously held a provincial deadlift record in powerlifting. He has competed in strength sports for over 30 years, starting in 1994 and is still an active competitor. His all-time best dead lift is 590 pounds at 163 pounds body weight.

Cranston is scheduled to represent Richmond and compete in another powerlifting tournament in May one month before graduating from high school this spring.
