On Nov. 23, the Richmond Christmas Fund will open its doors to our neighbours in need.
A program of Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), the Christmas Fund supports low-income residents, providing them with grocery vouchers, toys, and gift cards so they can enjoy a holiday celebration.
After a year at Lansdowne Centre, the program has returned to its original location, at the Richmond Caring Place. In 2024, registration and distribution will be held on four consecutive Saturdays, beginning Nov. 23 and concluding Dec. 14. On those days, the Christmas Fund will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"Every year, we do our best to adapt the program based on the space available," says Ed Gavsie, president & chief executive officer of RCRG. "This holiday season, space limitations have created a number of logistical challenges, but we're confident we can work around them and continue providing a valuable community service."
The Christmas Fund has also made changes to its eligibility criteria, with most households now required to show proof of income – both tax returns and bank statements – to qualify for assistance.
"Last year, our service numbers increased by 38 per cent, following a 22 per cent increase the year before," says Gavsie. "The Christmas Fund is supported almost entirely by community donations, and while Richmond residents are remarkably generous, we simply don't have the financial resources to meet the growing demand."
"The changes we've made will keep the Christmas Fund accessible to those who need it most, while preserving the program's long-term sustainability," says Gavsie.
