City reminds community of election signage rules

With the 2024 Provincial Election campaign officially underway, the City of Richmond is reminding candidates, their supporters and residents of the rules around placement of election-related signs.
In accordance with Bylaw 8713 (Election and Political Signs) a person cannot place a political sign, or allow a political sign to be placed, on:
- any city highway or right of way;
- a boulevard, centre median or sidewalk, or in a park;
- any roadway structure or traffic control device;
- a tree, planter, waste receptacle, newspaper or mail box located on city-owned land; or
- any other city-owned property including land, buildings, structures and equipment.
Signs must not be within one metre of a fire hydrant or in locations that may be hazardous to pedestrians, cyclists or vehicles, or impact traffic control devices. City staff will remove non-compliant signs and take them to the City Works Yard (5555 Lynas Lane) where they will be held for seven days for collection.
Violation of the Bylaw may result in fines up to $100. Signs must also be removed no later than October 26, seven days following the Oct. 19 election. Bylaw 8713 (Election and Political Signs) can be viewed online: richmond.ca/city-hall/bylaws.htm
