Calling all experienced and new gardeners. Do you want to grow your own food and flowers, but do not have the space? Sign up for a garden plot at the new Alexandra Community Garden opening this fall at 9620 Odlin Road.
Community gardens are member-maintained, shared green spaces on public land with plots for growing food, flowers and other plants. These spaces, constructed by the City of Richmond, are designed to bring residents together to connect with nature and their neighbours, while encouraging sustainable living and promoting local food production.
The new Alexandra Community Garden, spanning approximately 650 square metres (7,000 square feet), is situated east of the Lulu Island Energy District building at the Alexandra Neighbourhood Park. The garden is equipped with amenities such as irrigation connections, a tool shed with wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes and spading forks, and picnic tables and benches. The garden includes 34 regular plots and two accessible plots along with other inclusive amenities. The garden will provide low-barrier opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities to grow plants, while helping to create welcoming, safe and inclusive communities.
The city has partnered with Urban Bounty to oversee the plot assignments and renewals of Alexandra Community Garden. Urban Bounty also oversees the operation of 16 community garden sites throughout Richmond, as well as provides educational programs about gardening, food security and other related activities.
