The City of Richmond invites community members to share their ideas on how Richmond can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50 per cent by 2030. The City of Richmond has already successfully reduced emissions by 12 per cent city-wide since 2007, implementing the 2014 Community Energy and Emissions Plan. A Community Ideas Fair will be held on Tuesday, June 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Richmond City Hall (6911 No. 3 Road) to launch the next phase of community conversations on how Richmond can advance its leadership on climate action.
“The City of Richmond has been a proud leader and pioneer in responding to the effects of climate change, and we’ve been recognized internationally for our strategies in reducing GHG emissions. With that in mind, it is time for us to accelerate our actions and commitment,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “More than ever, it is critical for the entire community to get involved as the City of Richmond moves forward to become a zero-carbon community.”
Community members can share their ideas with City staff and interact with booths and activities which will address key opportunities for reducing GHG emissions, such as:
• energy efficiency and GHG emission standards for new buildings:
• low-carbon energy systems in new and existing buildings
• electric vehicles (EV)
• active transportation options (such as walking and cycling)
• complete communities (where residents can live, work, and play)
In March 2019, Richmond City Council declared a climate emergency in response to the urgent call in the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) recent report on limiting global warming to 1.5°C. To date, more than 600 cities across the world have made similar declarations to drive down their GHG emissions.
