McMath, MacNeill in today’s regional hoop finals

When it comes to basketball, McMath Secondary
students have plenty of reason to (w)hoop it up.
While the school’s senior girls team
continues its preparations for next week’s provincial championships at Langley
Events Centre, its juvenile girls’ team is also standing tall and will play for
the Vancouver and District championship this afternoon on the North Shore. McMath
will play host Seycove at the North Vancouver school, with tip-off scheduled
for 5:30 p.m.
McMath reached the title game with a 61-42
victory over Burnaby Mountain on Valentine’s Day, after earlier defeating
Handsworth 58-23. The Wildcats finished second in the Richmond league with an
8-1 record.
Hugh Boyd Trojans, winners of the Richmond
league with a 9-0 record, will play Burnaby Mountain in the consolation game
set for 4 p.m.
Boyd topped Burnaby south 71-22 in its
district tournament opener before bowing to Seycove 47-30 on Feb. 14.
Richmond’s three entries in the juvenile boys’
regional championships bowed out last week, with league champion Richmond Colts
falling 66-51 to Argyle, McMath losing a heartbreaker 44-43 to Burnaby Central
and Steveston-London being outscored 38-20 by Burnaby Mountain.
In the Vancouver and District junior boys’
championships, played last week, Burnaby South used home court to its advantage
in a 7-157 win over McMath in the tournament final Feb. 15. MacNeill topped St
Thomas Aquinas 52-34 in the consolation final. Burnaby South eliminated
Steveston-London Sharks with an earlier 60-39 victory.
New Westminster’s Glenbrook Middle School
will play West Vancouver for the bantam girls’ title today at 5:30 p.m. at
MacNeill Secondary. Argyle eliminated MacNeill with a 40-37 win on Feb. 13.
Handsworth ousted Burnett 47-33 and Glenbrook topped McNair 38-28 in other
tournament games.
In the bantam boys’ district championships,
Richmond Colts will play for the consolation title versus Seycove today at 4
p.m. at their home court (Richmond High). Earlier, the league-champion Colts
eliminated Burnaby Mountain 51-40, while Seycove eliminated MacNeill 72-54.
Burnaby South eliminated Burnett Breakers 57-22.
