The City of Richmond is seeking input from local businesses and the public to gain insights into the effects of the ban of single-use plastics and other items. A series of workshops is being offered to businesses and an online survey will be available for residents.

“In order to reduce unnecessary waste and pollution, we need to address how single-use items are routinely discarded,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “We recognize that changes will require a major adjustment in behaviour. This is why feedback from businesses and the public is essential. With a stronger understanding of what is happening today, we can better support the community with information and options.”

Single-use straws, bags and containers are the focus of Richmond’s recently proposed Single-Use Plastic and Other Items Bylaw No. 10000. City Council approved the bylaw in July and it is now being reviewed by the BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy. The City is using the time during the provincial review to provide the public with an opportunity to comment on the bylaw.

The public survey will be open from Friday, Oct. 18 to Sunday, Nov. 10, 2019 on letstalkrichmond.ca, and will be available in English, traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese.

The workshops will offer businesses an opportunity to comment on the proposed bylaw, provide feedback on samples of approved alternatives, as well as review communication pieces and other tools designed to support business. Local businesses have been notified by mail to register for the workshops. Stakeholder organizations in Richmond are also being contacted to attend.

The workshops are being offered from Oct. 17 until Nov. 29. The first six of twelve workshops are already full with over 150 participants registered.

The business targeted workshops with available space are as follows:

• Monday, Nov. 18, 2019, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

• Monday, Nov. 18, 2019, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

• Monday, Nov. 25, 2019, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

• Monday, Nov. 25, 2019, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

• Cantonese Friday, Nov. 29, 2019, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

• Mandarin Friday, Nov 29, 2019, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

All workshops listed above will be held at Richmond City Hall (6911 No. 3 Road) in room M.2.004.

Each workshop will cover the same content so it is only necessary to attend one. Additional workshops will be added if needed. The City asks for people to register in advance at singleuse@richmond.ca or call 604-276-4010.
