Thanks to a call from employees, thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise was returned to multiple retail stores at McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport.

Richmond RCMP officers stationed at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) responded to the mall on Aug. 31 for an alleged theft in progress at a store. The complainant was an employee from the store who said staff were, from a safe distance, following a woman who had allegedly stolen multiple items.

Police arrested two women who were allegedly in possession of three reusable shopping bags. A search resulted in the recovery of thousands of dollars’ worth of clothing from multiple retail stores.

This is an excellent example of ‘If you see something say something.’ Without the employee making the call to police, these suspects may have gotten away scot-free, says Staff Sgt. Maj. Shane Stovern, non-commissioned officer in charge of RCMP operations at YVR. Being able to recover and return this amount of merchandise to the impacted retailers put a big smile on our officers’ faces. We are here to serve the entire community of Sea Island and YVR. We encourage anyone who has been a victim or witness to a potential crime to contact police.

The two woman were released on police undertakings with conditions that include not being allowed to go to the mall. The investigation remains active and on-going.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has information regarding this file, is asked to call Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 2022-23643. Should you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crimestoppers by phone at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit them online at www.solvecrime.ca.
