City seeking highly-visible walls for community murals

The City of Richmond is launching its fourth annual Community Mural Program and is inviting property owners, community organizations, stratas, and non-profit organizations to apply to participate by offering walls to be painted.
To qualify, walls must be highly-visible and publicly accessible. The deadline to apply is Sept. 26, with murals to be completed in 2023.
“The Community Mural Program continues to add colour and vibrancy to Richmond while supporting local and regional artists,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “In addition, it supports the goals of the Richmond Arts Strategy to activate public spaces through and for the arts.”
Selected applicants will be notified in early October and city staff will then match successful applicants with a pre-qualified artist to create the mural and manage the creation process. Locations must be visually accessible to the general public, with a few other required conditions. Private, single family properties are not eligible.
“We are thrilled to have participated in the city’s Community Mural Program, which has resulted in the creation of a large, vibrant, colourful mural in the Moncton Street breezeway in the summer of 2022,” said Jaime Gusto, general manager of Steveston Harbour Authority. “The mural never fails to draw the attention and admiration of anyone who passes by it. Steveston Harbour Authority worked closely with artist Carolyn Wong, who brought our vision to life and we couldn’t be more pleased with the final result.”
Since the launch of the Community Mural Program in 2019, there have been 15 murals completed throughout Richmond including:
• A Fisherman’s Dream by Carolyn Wong at the Steveston Harbour Authority (3180 Chatham St.)
• Stages of Bloom by Carmen Chan at Gateway Theatre (6500 Gilbert Rd.)
• Lord Byng Mural by Erica Phillips and Maddy Phillips at Lord Byng Elementary School (3711 Georgia St.)
