COVID-19 in B.C.: 4,997 new cases, 24 deaths

B.C. health officials reported 4,997 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 313,076 cases.

Of the new cases, 862 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 1,702 in the Fraser Health region, 626 in the Island Health region, 1,251 in the Interior Health region, 555 in the Northern Health region and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.

There are 31,822 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 987 COVID-positive individuals are in hospital, 129 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 10,466,993 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,166,318 of those are second doses and 1,874,956 are third doses. 

This means that 92.9 per cent of adults, 92.6 per cent of people aged 12 and older and 89.6 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 90.3 per cent of adults, 89.9 per cent of those aged 12 and older and 83.6 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses; 43.3 per cent of adults and 40.4 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

Sadly, there were 24 new virus-related deaths reported since Friday, bringing that total to 2,553. Of those who died, three lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 18 in the Fraser Health region, one in the Interior Health region and two in the Northern Health region.

Health authorities reported six new health-care facility outbreaks and declared four over. Active outbreaks continue at 53 long-term care facilities, one assisted or independent living facility and 10 acute care facilities.

From Jan. 14 to 20, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 28.5 per cent of cases. From Jan. 7 to 20, they accounted for 30.6 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Not vaccinated: 325 (25.9 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 59 (4.7 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 872 (69.4 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Jan. 14 to 20)

• Not vaccinated: 418.2

• Partially vaccinated: 197.6

• Fully vaccinated: 253.1

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Jan. 7 to 20)

• Not vaccinated: 81.7

• Partially vaccinated: 48.4

• Fully vaccinated: 18.7
