B.C.’s COVID-19 hospitalizations rise

Hospitalizations related to an active case of COVID-19 in B.C. have risen to 317, the highest since Nov. 24, with 83 of those people in intensive care. A week ago, the province reported 206 hospitalizations. 

In all, there are 29,967 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. today including those in hospital. B.C. health officials also reported 3,798 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 270,508 cases.

Of the new cases, 840 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 1,739 in the Fraser Health region, 566 in the Island Health region, 473 in the Interior Health region, 179 in the Northern Health region and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.

To date, 9,502,325 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,138,255 of those are second doses and 998,164 are third doses. 

This means that 92.4 per cent of adults, 92.0 per cent of people aged 12 and older and 88.3 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 89.7 per cent of adults, 89.3 per cent of those aged 12 and older and 83.0 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses; 23.1 per cent of adults and 21.5 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

There were no new virus-related deaths reported today.

Health authorities reported three health-care facility outbreaks over. Active outbreaks continue at 17 long-term care facilities (including Fraserview Retirement Community in Richmond), one assisted or independent living facility and three acute care facilities.

From Dec. 28 to Jan. 3, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 16.2 per cent of cases, and from Dec. 21 to Jan. 3, they accounted for 51.4 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Partially vaccinated: 148.1

• Fully vaccinated: 412.3
