Record new COVID-19 cases in B.C. today

B.C. health officials reported 1,308 new cases of COVID-19 today—a single-day record. Previously, the highest case increase in a single day was 1,293 on April 8. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 229,643 cases.

Confirmed cases of the Omicron variant are up to 756, with 413 of those in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (which includes Richmond). Elsewhere in the province, there are 129 cases in the Fraser Health region, 204 in the Island Health region, eight in Interior Health and two in Northern Health.

Of the new cases, 525 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 419 in the Fraser Health region, 202 in the Island Health region, 138 in the Interior Health region, 23 in the Northern Health region and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.

There are 6,348 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 192 of those people are hospitalized, 76 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 9,190,914 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,120,332 of those are second doses and 744,549 are third doses. 

This means that 92.1 per cent of adults, 91.7 per cent of people aged 12 and older and 87.5 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 89.4 per cent of adults, 88.9 per cent of those aged 12 and older and 82.7 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses. Seventeen per cent of adults and 16 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

Sadly, there was one new virus-related death reported today, bringing that total to 2,403. The person who passed away lived in the Northern Health region.

An active outbreak continues at one acute care facility.

From Dec. 13 to 19, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 30.7 per cent of cases.
From Dec. 6 to 19, they accounted for 71.7 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Not vaccinated: 1,487 (29.4 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 66 (1.3 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 3,513 (69.3 per cent)

Past two weeks cases hospitalized (Dec. 6 to 19)—Total 141

• Not vaccinated: 95 (67.4 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: six (4.3 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 40 (28.4 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Dec. 13 to 19)

• Not vaccinated: 201.7

• Partially vaccinated: 33.1

• Fully vaccinated: 77.3

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Dec. 6 to 19)

• Not vaccinated: 21.8

• Partially vaccinated: 5.0

• Fully vaccinated: 0.9
