Omicron cases now up to 302 in B.C.

There have now been 302 cases of the Omicron variant of concern confirmed in B.C.

As of yesterday there were 135 cases. Today’s total includes 93 cases in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (which includes Richmond), 58 in the Fraser Health region, 145 in the Island Health region, five in the Interior Health region and one in the Northern Health region.

B.C. health authorities reported 789 new cases of COVID-19 today, a high of nearly three months. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 225,785 cases.

Of the new cases, 286 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 186 in the Fraser Health region, 147 in the Island Health region, 131 in the Interior Health region, 39 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 4,313 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 191 of those people are hospitalized, 74 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 9,101,805 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,113,484 of those are second doses and 688,167 are third doses. 

This means that 92 per cent of adults, 91.6 per cent of people aged 12 and older and 86.9 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 89.2 per cent of adults, 88.7 per cent of those aged 12 and older and 82.5 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses. Sixteen per cent of adults and 15 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

Sadly, there were three new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 2,399. Of those who died, one lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, one in the Fraser Health region and one in the Northern Health region.

Health authorities reported one new health-care facility outbreak at an acute care facility, which is the province’s only health-care outbreak.

From Dec. 9 to 15, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 42.8 per cent of cases. From Dec. 2 to 15, they accounted for 71.6 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Partially vaccinated: 66 (2.0 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 1,942 (57.2 per cent)

• Not vaccinated: 105 (67.7 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: six (3.9 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 44 (28.4 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Dec. 9 to 15)

• Not vaccinated: 186.1

• Partially vaccinated: 33.8

• Fully vaccinated: 42.9

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Dec. 2 to 15)

• Not vaccinated: 23.8

• Partially vaccinated: 4.9

• Fully vaccinated: 1.0
