B.C. health authorities reported 584 new cases of COVID-19 today, a further increase from yesterday’s one-month high. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 224,245 cases.

During a press conference, Health Minister Adrian Dix echoed the federal government’s recommendation to avoid non-essential international travel.

“There will be other trips, but you only have one health and one life, and your health is vitally important to that life, so follow the advice,” said Dix.

In response to questions about rapid tests, Dix said the province will outline a plan next week. B.C. is waiting for a particular type of take-home test which is not yet available in wide numbers across Canada, although about 35,000 rapid tests are being used each day in the province.

Discussion is ongoing on possible health measures, including capacity limits.

Of today’s new cases, 180 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 172 in the Fraser Health region, 109 in the Island Health region, 92 in the Interior Health region, 31 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 3,458 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 193 of those people are hospitalized, 77 of whom are in intensive care.

To date, 9,032,599 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.

Sadly, there were seven new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 2,393.

Health authorities reported one health-care facility outbreak over. Active outbreaks continue at one long-term care facility and one acute care facility.
