Five cases of Omicron confirmed in B.C. to date

B.C. health officials said so far five cases of the Omicron variant of concern (VOC) have been confirmed in the province.

Three of the cases are in Vancouver Coastal Health (which includes Richmond) and two are in Fraser Health. All five cases are related to international travel.

Health officials also reported 326 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 220,856 cases.

Of the new cases, 53 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 92 in the Fraser Health region, 71 in the Island Health region, 88 in the Interior Health region, 22 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 2,814 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 242 of those people are hospitalized, 82 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 8,832,580 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,088,609 of those are second doses and 504,977 are third doses. 

This means that 91.7 per cent of adults, 91.3 per cent of people aged 12 and older and 85.6 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 88.7 per cent of adults, 88.2 per cent of those aged 12 and older and 82 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses. Twelve per cent of adults and 11 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

Sadly, there was one new virus-related death reported today, bringing that total to 2,363. The person who died lived in the Northern Health region.

Active outbreaks continue at two long-term care facilities, one assisted or independent living facility and two acute care facilities.

From Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 58.7 per cent of cases.
From Nov. 22 to Dec. 5, they accounted for 63.1 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Not vaccinated: 1,326 (54.7 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 97 (4.0 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 1,000 (41.3 per cent)

Past two weeks cases hospitalized (Nov. 22 to Dec. 5)—Total 182

• Not vaccinated: 108 (59.3 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 7 (3.8 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 67 (36.8 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Nov. 29 to Dec. 5)

• Not vaccinated: 170.9

• Partially vaccinated: 46.8

• Fully vaccinated: 22.2

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Nov. 22 to Dec. 5)

• Not vaccinated: 23.3

• Partially vaccinated: 5.2

• Fully vaccinated: 1.5
