B.C. reports 752 new COVID-19 cases, nine deaths

B.C. health authorities reported 752 new cases of COVID-19 today, two of which are epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 191,124 cases.

Of the new cases, 85 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 297 in the Fraser Health region, 76 in the Island Health region, 164 in the Interior Health region, 130 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 5,945 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 350 of those people are hospitalized, 136 of whom are in intensive care. The hospitalization figure is the highest since mid-May.

To date, 7,908,832 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,797,462 of those are second doses. 

This means that 88.9 per cent of adults and 88.4 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 82.7 per cent of adults and 81.9 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.

Sadly, there were nine new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 1,992. Of those who died, three lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, five in the Fraser Health region and one in the Island Health region.

Health authorities reported one new healthcare facility outbreak and declared two over. Active outbreaks continue at 13 long-term care facilities, two assisted or independent living facilities and three acute care facilities.

From Sept. 28 to Oct. 4, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 70.2 per cent of cases and from Sept. 21 to Oct. 4, they accounted for 77.6 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Not vaccinated: 3,117 (63.7 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 316 (6.5 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 1,461 (29.9 per cent)

Past two weeks cases hospitalized (Sept. 21 to Oct. 4)—Total 420

• Not vaccinated: 291 (69.3 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 35 (8.3 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 94 (22.4 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Sept. 28 to Oct. 4)

• Not vaccinated: 296.8

• Partially vaccinated: 89.0

• Fully vaccinated: 35.5

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Sept. 21 to Oct. 4)

• Not vaccinated: 44.0

• Partially vaccinated: 16.3

• Fully vaccinated: 2.1
