Daily cases rise to 861 in B.C. today

There were 861 new cases of COVID-19 today according to the dashboard maintained by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 181,798 cases.

Of the new cases, 116 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 372 in the Fraser Health region, 86 in the Island Health region, 164 in the Interior Health region, 123 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

Locally, cases in Richmond remained virtually the same last week (59 between Sept. 12 and 18) as the previous week (56 between Sept. 5 and 11). 

There are 5,726 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 330 of those people are hospitalized, 148 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 7,756,634 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,701,696 of those are second doses. 

This means that 87.8 per cent of adults and 87.3 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 80.7 per cent of adults and 79.9 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.

Local vaccination rates continue to exceed the provincial average, with 89 per cent of eligible Richmondites aged 12-plus having received one dose of vaccine and 83 per cent having received two doses as of Tuesday.

Sadly, there were five new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 1,915.

One healthcare facility outbreak was declared over. Active outbreaks continue at 15 long-term care facilities, four assisted or independent living facilities and three acute care facilities.

From Sept. 15 to 21, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 75.5 per cent of cases and from Sept. 8 to 21, they accounted for 82.6 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Not vaccinated: 2,996 (67.8 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 342 (7.7 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 1,079 (24.4 per cent)

• Not vaccinated: 327 (74.8 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 34 (7.8 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 76 (17.4 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Sept. 15 to 21)

• Not vaccinated: 289.0

• Partially vaccinated: 87.9

• Fully vaccinated: 27.0

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Sept. 8 to 21)

• Not vaccinated: 46.5

• Partially vaccinated: 13.3

• Fully vaccinated: 1.8

After factoring for age, people not vaccinated are 25.8 times more likely to be hospitalized than those fully vaccinated.
