B.C.’s COVID-19 death toll highest since May

In the last 24 hours, 11 people lost their lives due to COVID-19—the most in a single day since May.

Of those who died, four lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (which includes Richmond), two in the Fraser Health region and five in the Interior Health region. In total, the province has seen 1,888 COVID-related deaths.

B.C. health authorities also reported 768 new cases of COVID-19 today, 19 of which are epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 177,954 cases.

Of the new cases, 83 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 239 in the Fraser Health region, 102 in the Island Health region, 183 in the Interior Health region, 161 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 6,031 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 298 of those people are hospitalized, 135 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 7,675,294 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,659,495 of those are second doses. 

This means that 87.0 per cent of adults and 86.5 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 79.8 per cent of adults and 78.9 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.

Health authorities reported three healthcare facility outbreaks over. Active outbreaks continue at 14 long-term care facilities, three assisted or independent living facilities and three acute care facilities.

From Sept. 9 to 15, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 75.9 per cent of cases and from Sept. 2 to 15 they accounted for 86.2 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Not vaccinated: 3288 (68.4 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 358 (7.5 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 1,158 (24.1 per cent)

Past two weeks cases hospitalized (Sept. 2 to 15)—Total 384

• Not vaccinated: 310 (80.7 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 21 (5.5 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 53 (13.8 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Sept. 9 to 15)

• Not vaccinated: 312.9

• Partially vaccinated: 91.5

• Fully vaccinated: 29.5

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Sept. 2 to 15)

• Not vaccinated: 43.2

• Partially vaccinated: 8.4

• Fully vaccinated: 1.2

After factoring for age, people not vaccinated are 35.1 times more likely to be hospitalized than those fully vaccinated.
