COVID-19 in B.C.: 820 new cases, nine deaths

B.C. health authorities reported 820 new cases of COVID-19 today, 11 of which are epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 173,158 cases.

Of the new cases, 112 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 264 in the Fraser Health region, 90 in the Island Health region, 253 in the Interior Health region, 101 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 5,850 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 281 of those people are hospitalized, 135 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 7,583,999 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,614,503 of those are second doses. 

This means that 86.1 per cent of adults and 85.5 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 78.9 per cent of adults and 78.0 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.

Sadly, there were nine new virus-related deaths reported today—the most in a single day since early June—bringing that total to 1,856.

Active outbreaks continue at 15 long-term care facilities, five assisted or independent living facilities and two acute care facilities.

From Sept. 2 to 8, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 78.4 per cent of cases and from Aug. 26 to Sept. 8, they accounted for 86.6 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Not vaccinated: 3,252 (69.8 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 402 (8.6 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 1,007 (21.6 per cent)

Past two weeks cases hospitalized (Aug. 26 to Sept. 8)—Total 358

• Not vaccinated: 292 (81.6 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 18 (5.0 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 48 (13.4 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Sept. 2 to 8)

• Not vaccinated: 301.2

• Partially vaccinated: 88.7

• Fully vaccinated: 26.1

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Aug. 26 to Sept. 8)

• Not vaccinated: 39.5

• Partially vaccinated: 6.7

• Fully vaccinated: 1.1

After factoring for age, people not vaccinated are 35 times more likely to be hospitalized than those fully vaccinated.
