B.C. health authorities reported 801 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 167,654 cases.

Of the new cases, 128 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 267 in the Fraser Health region, 66 in the Island Health region, 237 in the Interior Health region, 103 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

In response to climbing case counts in the Northern Health region, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced new measures for that region today. Personal gatherings will be restricted to one other family or five guests. Henry said transmission has taken off “in a number of communities with pockets of unvaccinated people” in the Northern Health region, which is leading to increased hospitalization and filling up of intensive care units in the area.

There are 5,931 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 199 of those people are hospitalized, 116 of whom are in intensive care.

To date, 7,494,567 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,565,148 of those are second doses.

This means that 85.3 per cent of adults and 84.6 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 77.9 per cent of adults and 76.9 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.

Sadly, there were six new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 1,824.

Health authorities reported two new healthcare facility outbreaks and declared one over. Active outbreaks continue at 11 long-term care, six assisted or independent living facilities and three acute care facilities.

From Aug. 25 to 31, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 79.0 per cent of cases and from Aug 18 to 31, they accounted for 84.0 per cent of hospitalizations.
