There are less than 200 people hospitalized with an active case of COVID-19 today in B.C.—the province’s lowest number since mid-November.

Sadly, there were 12 new virus-related deaths reported since Friday, bringing that total to 1,722.

Of 2,102 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C., 199 of those people are hospitalized, 63 of whom are in intensive care. This is a decrease of 25 hospitalizations but an increase of four people in critical care. Deputy provincial health officer Dr. Réka Gustafson added that 38 people across the province require mechanical ventilation—a statistic that is not usually provided.

Gustafson also reported 481 new cases of COVID-19 over the last three days, bringing the province’s cumulative total to 145,530. There were 217 new cases from Friday to Saturday, 131 from Saturday to Sunday and a further 133 in the last 24 hours.

Of the new cases, 70 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 285 in the Fraser Health region, nine in the Island Health region, 101 in the Interior Health region and 15 in the Northern Health region.

To date, 3,635,795 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca-SII COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 314,246 of those are second doses.

This means 73.9 per cent of those aged 18-plus have received a dose and 71.5 per cent of all eligible British Columbians, including thirty-nine per cent of youth aged 12 to 17.

Gustafson reported one new healthcare facility outbreak. Active outbreaks are now ongoing at six long-term care, assisted living and independent living facilities and two acute care facilities, including Richmond Lions Manor-Bridgeport care home and Richmond Hospital.
