Richmond COVID-19 vaccination rates remain low

Richmond continues to lag well behind the provincial average when it comes to COVID-19 vaccinations.
In the City Centre neighbourhood, just 53 per cent of adults had received a dose as of Thursday. In Broadmoor, the vaccination rate is 56 per cent, and in the Blundell neighbourhood it’s at 57 per cent. The provincial average is at 69.7 per cent.
The East and West Cambie/Bridgeport neighbourhood has a 58 per cent vaccination rate, Thompson/Seafair 60 per cent, and Gilmore/Shellmont/East/Hamilton 62 per cent. Only Steveston, with 71 per cent of adults having received a dose, is above the provincial average.
To date, 3,250,116 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca-SII COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 179,954 of those are second doses.
Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry also reported one more case of vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, the rare blood clots that can happen following vaccination. The person affected was a man in his 30s living in the Island Health region, who is now receiving treatment.
Henry reported 708 new cases of COVID-19 since Friday, bringing the cumulative total to 144,289 cases since the pandemic began.
There were 258 new cases between Friday and Saturday, 238 from Saturday to Sunday and 212 in the last 24 hours.
Of the new cases, 140 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 394 in the Fraser Health region, 18 in the Island Health region, 113 in the Interior Health region, 42 in the Northern Health region and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.
There are 2,953 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 249 of those people are hospitalized, 78 of whom are in intensive care.
Sadly, there were 11 new virus-related deaths reported since Friday, bringing that total to 1,703. Of the people who died, one was in their 40s, two in their 60s, six in their 70s and two over age 80.
There is a new outbreak at Richmond Lions Manor Bridgeport, a care home that was the site of a previous outbreak. The outbreak at Richmond Hospital also continues. Province-wide, there are active outbreaks at four other long-term care, assisted living and independent living facilities, as well as a new outbreak at a Surrey Islamic school.
