Pregnant people aged 16 and older in B.C. can now book their COVID-19 vaccine.

"All Health Canada-approved vaccines are safe and effective, and I encourage everyone to register and receive their vaccine as soon as they are eligible. Today, this includes people who are pregnant," said provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry. "We have reviewed the data here in B.C. and this shows pregnant people experience severe illness from COVID-19 at a rate that is similar to people who are in their 50s. By prioritizing pregnant people today, we add another layer of protection for them, their babies and their communities."

B.C. health authorities also reported 697 new cases of COVID-19 today as the province’s third wave continues to trend downwards. Sixteen of today’s cases are epidemiologically linked, bringing the province’s cumulative total to 132,353.

Of the new cases, 142 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 456 in the Fraser Health region, 19 in the Island Health region, 65 in the Interior Health region, 14 in the Northern Health region and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.

There are 7,161 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 486 of those people are hospitalized, 173 of whom are in intensive care. A further 10,961 people are under active public health monitoring.

To date, 1,910,162 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca-SII COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 92,244 of which are second doses.

Sadly, there was one new virus-related death reported today, bringing that total to 1,597.

Health authorities reported two healthcare outbreaks over. Active outbreaks continue at six long-term care, assisted living and independent living facilities and three acute care facilities.
