There are more than 500 people hospitalized in B.C. with active cases of COVID-19 for the first time since the pandemic began. Today’s count of 502 is an increase of 19 from yesterday’s number. Critical care admissions are down three to 161.
“The pressure on our healthcare system is immense right now, and healthcare workers need our help,” said provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.
Health Minister Adrian Dix said nine Lower Mainland hospitals, including Richmond Hospital, will postpone some surgeries for a minimum of two weeks. These hospitals will move to urgent and emergency surgeries only.
Henry also announced 1,006 new cases today, a preliminary count which may be updated via a written statement this afternoon. Since the pandemic began, there have been 122,757 cases in B.C.
Of the new cases, 241 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 600 in the Fraser Health region, 37 in the Island Health region, 83 in the Interior Health region, 42 in the Northern Health region and three in people who normally live outside Canada.
The latest local data shows there were 229 new cases in Richmond between April 11 and 17.
Sadly, four people lost their lives to COVID-19, bringing that total to 1,550. There was one new healthcare outbreak announced, bringing the total number of active outbreaks to five in long-term care or assisted living facilities and seven in acute care facilities.
To date, 1,500,430 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, 88,475 of which are second doses.
