About 50 per cent of COVID-19 cases in B.C. are variants of concern, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said today.

Despite this information, no new variant case numbers was provided “due to a data issue.”

Henry also announced 3,289 new cases of the virus in B.C. over the weekend. There were 1,283 cases from Friday to Saturday, 1,036 from Saturday to Sunday and a further 970 in the last 24 hours. B.C.’s cumulative total has reached 112,829 cases since the pandemic began.

Of the new cases, 740 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 1,957 in the Fraser Health region, 167 in the Island Health region, 299 in the Interior Health region and 125 in the Northern Health region.

The latest local data shows there were 272 new cases in Richmond between April 2 and 8. This is a further increase from the 218 reported between March 28 and April 3.

There are 9,937 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 368 people are hospitalized, 121 of whom are in intensive care. This is an increase of 36 hospitalizations and 19 intensive care admissions since Friday’s report. A further 15,900 people are under active public health monitoring.

To date, 1,112,101 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca-SII COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 87,744 of which are second doses.
