Richmond marked Philippine Independence Day with a civic event highlighted by a flag raising ceremony June 12 at city hall. The Filipino culture will continue to be celebrated throughout the month.
Marilou Yodogawa of the Multicultural Helping House, who oversaw the event, says the annual tradition is a great opportunity to share the Filipino history and culture with the rest of the community.
“Intercultural awareness creates mutual respect and understanding of the different perspectives and traditions that make up our diverse cultural heritage,” she says.
Started seven years ago, the Multicultural Helping House Society is a dynamic and energetic group of Richmondites 55 and older that holds activities and workshops on health and wellness each Saturday.
“This year marks a special year for the Filipino culture,” she says. “As of October 2018, June is now officially recognized as Philippine Heritage Month “(in British Columbia).”
