In a year when Richmond residents were asked to stay apart to stay safe, the Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants program helped create a sense of connection.

Operated by Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), in partnership with the Vancouver Foundation and Association of Neighbourhood Houses of BC, the program allows community members to apply for up to $500, which they can then use to carry out a community project.

In 2020, RCRG awarded 38 grants, together worth nearly $18,000.

“We were concerned, initially, because so many of our grants go towards social gatherings like block parties and cultural celebrations,” says Jocelyn Wong, general manager of RCRG. “Of course, those events couldn’t happen last year, but project leaders still found creative ways to bring the community together.”

Many projects happened virtually. Bea Martin, for instance, developed a series of nature journaling activities, which she made available for free online at www.curiositycreativitybeyond.com

Other projects took place in person, at a safe social distance. Angela Leung’s family, including her six- and eight-year-old children, became Seafair’s No. 1 elves, using their grant to create and deliver 100 comfort kits throughout their neighbourhood.

“The pandemic has changed the way we live, but our need to connect with one another is as strong as ever,” says Wong. “In these challenging times, Neighbourhood Small Grants have empowered people to build community on their own terms, and the results have been inspiring.”

Now, there’s an opportunity to continue the momentum.

On Feb. 23, applications opened for the 2021 Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants program. Eligibility criteria, project guidelines, and an online application form can be found at www.neighbourhoodsmallgrants.ca

The final day to apply is April 20.
