John Yap has been re-elected as MLA of Richmond-Steveston.

Originally elected in 2005, Yap has now been re-elected three times, this time following a strong challenge from NDP candidate Kelly Greene.

With 66 of 68 polling stations reporting, Yap garnered 47.91 per cent of the vote, to Greene’s 39 per cent. Green Party candidate Roy Sakata finished a distant third with a little more than 13 per cent of the popular vote.

“I understand the feeling among some members of the community and the desire for a difference or change…I heard that and that is understandable,” Yap said minutes before Global BC News declared him victorious.

Asked about the issues that resonated most with voters he spoke with, housing affordability was a common theme.

“If I was asked what was the number one issue at the doorstep, it’s affordability and housing prices.”
